The Board of Directors of the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) has opened a search for the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). JASC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has served the Japanese American and broader community for over 75 years by providing social services to aging adults; the Legacy Center historical archive which preserves and shares Chicago’s Japanese American experience; cultural and educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds; and a shared place for community. Later this year, JASC will be fulfilling its long-time dream of moving into a newly renovated building that will create a destination center for the community. JASC’s new home will be in the West Ridge neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois at 5700 N. Lincoln Avenue. JASC is at an exciting and pivotal moment in time, with sound operations and base of supporters. JASC is seeking a talented executive leader capable of positioning the organization for the future by setting the vision, strategy, and plans; then, engaging people to act and participate. This individual will become a key leader in the community at large, and work with staff, board, funders, and stakeholders across academia, government, private sector, the arts, and other community organizations. The CEO will report to the Board of Directors. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Employment Type: Full Time

Salary Range: $40,000-$42,000

ABOUT JASC & JOB SUMMARY:

Founded in 1946, JASC helped resettle nearly 20,000 Japanese Americans in Chicago following their incarceration during WWII. Since then, JASC programs now include social services for older adults, preserving Japanese American cultural heritage through the Legacy Center archives and collections, and sharing Japanese culture through classes, art and music.

JASC is at an exciting inflection point in its 78-year history and will move into a newly renovated building later this fall, allowing the organization to expand programs and increase participation in JASC cultural & community programs. 

The Program Coordinator at the JASC  plays a crucial role in planning, organizing, and overseeing cultural and community programs aimed at serving the Japanese American community and other diverse populations. The Program Coordinator ensures that all programs run smoothly, meet the community’s needs, and align with the organization’s mission of fostering a better understanding of the Japanese American experience and promoting well-being across generations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program & Event Coordination

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services in accordance with JASC’s mission and goals.
  • Plan and execute community events, workshops, and cultural programs.
  • Coordinate logistics for program activities, including venue booking, catering, scheduling, resource allocation, and participant recruitment.
  • Collaborate with other staff, volunteers, and community partners to enhance program offerings.

Community Outreach:

  • Conduct outreach to the Japanese American community and other target populations to promote participation in JASC programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders.
  • Translate/Interpret Japanese to English or English to Japanese when needed.

Marketing and Promotion:

  • Develop promotional materials and strategies to increase program visibility and participation.
  • Manage social media accounts and the organization’s website to keep the community informed about upcoming events and programs.

Volunteer Management:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to support program activities.
  • Provide ongoing support and recognition to volunteers.

Skills and Experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in event planning, program management, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in program coordination, community outreach, or a related role
  • Experience working with diverse populations and community organizations is preferred
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Bilingual in English and Japanese is strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and familiarity with technology systems (i.e. DonorPerfect, Auctria, WordPress, Jotforms)
  • Knowledge of Japanese American culture and history
  • Passion for community service and social justice
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment
  • Legally able to work in the U.S.

JASC では小中高校生向けの日本語プログラム、どんぐり会の クラスのインストラクターを募集しています。2024-2025 年度の期間中、週に 1 回、60 分のオンライン授業を担当していただきます。

Japanese Instructor Position

● JASC is currently seeking online and in person instructors for our Donguri Kai Japanese language program, targeting elementary, middle, and high school students. During the 2024-2025 academic year, instructors will be responsible for conducting classes once a week, each session lasting 60 minutes.

Job Description
● Creating and preparing materials and projects aligned with the curriculum
● Implementing various activities to enhance conversation, comprehension, reading, writing, presentation, and translation skills
● Planning, preparing for, and chaperoning seasonal events and activities
● Facilitating smooth communication with parents and JASC staff
● Participating in instructor meetings
● Assisting with JASC events and public relations

Work Conditions
● Location: Online classes via Zoom or In Person classes (at 5700 N Lincoln Ave beginning Fall 2024)
● Schedule: Once a week (60-minute sessions)
● Employment period: From September 2024 to the end of July 2025. Renewal for the following year is possible.

Required Skills & Experience
● Legally eligible to work in the United States
● Proficiency in both Japanese and English (proficient reading and writing skills in Japanese are essential)
● Experience with Zoom or other video conferencing tools, document creation, and presentation software
● Previous teaching experience is not required. We welcome candidates with experience working with children, volunteering, and a passion for teaching Japanese to kids.

Compensation
● $60 per 60-minute class session. This rate includes time for class preparation, class conduct, communication to parents and JASC, Donguri teacher’s meetings, and other class related activities.
● No benefits provided due to the independent contractor status
