Founded in 1946, JASC (Japanese American Service Committee) empowers individuals, families, and communities through culturally responsive social services, arts and cultural programming, and educational opportunities. The Director of Development will play a critical leadership role in ensuring JASC’s continued growth and long-term sustainability through philanthropic partnerships and community engagement.
JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Development is a key member of JASC’s Leadership Team and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, direction, and oversight of all fundraising, donor engagement, and development communications activities. Working in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors, the Director of Development develops and executes comprehensive annual fundraising strategies that generate sustainable philanthropic support for JASC’s mission.
The Director of Development leads all aspects of individual giving, major gifts, institutional giving, corporate partnerships, planned giving, special events, donor stewardship, fundraising communications, and development operations. This position also oversees the development department staff, manages fundraising systems and processes, and helps foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
The Development Department at JASC consists of the Director of Development and a part-time Admin who manages gift processing and data entry. The Director of Development reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership
- Serve as a member of JASC’s Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy, planning, and decision-making.
- Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership to advance JASC’s mission, strategic priorities, and long-term sustainability.
- Develop annual fundraising goals, strategies, budgets, and performance metrics aligned with the agency’s strategic plan.
- Foster a culture of philanthropy across the organization by engaging staff, volunteers, and Board Members in fundraising activities.
- Prepare regular fundraising reports and analyses for the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Staff and support the Board Committees related to fundraising and assist Board Members in fulfilling their fundraising responsibilities.
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Generation
Develop and implement a comprehensive annual development plan that includes:
- Major Gifts
- Annual Giving
- Corporate Partnerships
- Foundation Grants
- Government Grants (as appropriate)
- Planned Giving
- Special Events
- Donor Stewardship
- Prospect Research
- Capital and Endowment Campaigns, when applicable
Specific responsibilities include:
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospective supporters.
- Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects through all stages of the donor lifecycle.
- Develop personalized cultivation and stewardship strategies for high-capacity donors.
- Partner with the CEO and Board Members on major gift solicitations.
- Oversee annual fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, online giving, and year-end appeals.
- Develop strategies to increase donor retention, acquisition, and annual giving.
- Lead corporate sponsorship and partnership efforts.
- Oversee foundation and corporate grant strategy, proposal development, reporting, and stewardship.
- Support the Legacy Center Director with grant research and writing.
- Collaborate with external consultants, campaign counsel, and grant writers as needed.
- Identify emerging philanthropic opportunities and funding sources.
Communications & Donor Engagement
- Oversee development-related communications in collaboration with marketing staff and CEO.
- Work with marketing staff to ensure consistent messaging that reflects JASC’s mission, impact, and strategic priorities.
- Direct donor recognition and stewardship efforts, including acknowledgments, impact reports, recognition events, and naming opportunities.
- Assist in the development of annual reports, newsletters, campaign materials (as needed), and fundraising collateral.
- Support public awareness efforts that strengthen community engagement and philanthropic investment.
Special Events
- Provide strategic leadership for JASC’s fundraising events, including Cranes & Cocktails and other donor cultivation activities.
- Develop event fundraising strategies that maximize sponsorships, donor engagement, and net revenue.
- Collaborate with staff, volunteers, committees, and vendors to ensure successful event execution.
Development Operations
- Oversee donor database integrity, gift processing, reporting, and prospect management.
- Utilize fundraising data and analytics to monitor performance and inform strategy.
- Ensure compliance with all donor reporting requirements, gift acceptance policies, and fundraising best practices.
- Develop and monitor the annual development budget.
- Evaluate fundraising effectiveness through measurable outcomes and key performance indicators.
Staff Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate development staff.
- Establish clear goals, expectations, and professional development plans.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing, and donor-centered team culture.
- Encourage innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
Education
1. Bachelor’s degree required.
2. Master’s degree, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), or equivalent professional fundraising credentials preferred.
Experience
1. Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible nonprofit fundraising experience.
2. At least 3 years of leadership or management experience.
3. Demonstrated success securing major gifts and managing relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
4. Experience developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies.
5. Experience partnering with executive leadership and volunteer boards.
6. Experience managing fundraising events and donor stewardship programs.
7. Knowledge of fundraising best practices and donor-centered philanthropy.
8. Familiarity with Chicago-area philanthropy and the nonprofit community preferred.
9. Local travel throughout the Chicago metropolitan area is expected.

ABOUT JASC
The Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) is seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable Japanese language instructors to join our Adult Japanese Language Program. JASC offers classes for adult learners at a variety of proficiency levels, providing students with opportunities to develop their Japanese language skills and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.
Instructors will be responsible for planning and leading engaging classes, supporting students with a range of learning goals, and fostering a welcoming and encouraging learning environment. Ideal candidates will have strong Japanese language proficiency, teaching or instructional experience, and a passion for working with adult learners.
Japanese Instructor Position (Adult Language Classes)
The Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) is seeking experienced Japanese language instructors for its Adult Japanese Language Program for the 2026–2027 academic year and beyond.
JASC offers Japanese language classes for adult learners at multiple proficiency levels. We are currently seeking instructors for the following courses:
- Beginners I
- Beginners II
- Intermediate
- Advanced
We are seeking instructors who can teach in person at JASC and/or online. Preference will be given to instructors who are available to commit to the full academic year and provide consistency for students as they progress through the program.
JASC’s Adult Japanese Language Program is designed to help students build practical language skills and confidence while developing a deeper understanding of Japanese language and culture. Courses follow established textbooks and curriculum guidelines, but instructors are encouraged to bring their own teaching styles and develop activities that support student engagement, growth, and retention.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare and teach engaging Japanese language classes for adult learners.
- Develop lessons aligned with the designated textbook and course curriculum, including Genki I, Genki II, or other materials appropriate to the course level.
- Create and implement supplemental activities and materials that support conversation, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and overall language development.
- Customize lessons and teaching approaches to meet student needs while maintaining alignment with course learning goals.
- Foster an engaging and supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation, confidence, growth, and continued enrollment.
- Monitor student progress and communicate with JASC staff regarding student needs, attendance, and other program-related matters.
- Participate in instructor meetings and collaborate with JASC staff and fellow instructors to support curriculum continuity and student progression.
- Communicate with students and JASC staff regarding reasonable class-related questions and concerns.
Class Format & Schedule
- Schedule: Classes meet once per week in eight-week sessions.
- Class Length: 90 minutes per class.
- Academic Year: The program consists of four eight-week sessions, totaling 32 weeks of instruction.
- Class Size:
- Beginners I & II: Approximately 15–20 students
- Intermediate: Maximum of 15 students
- Advanced: Maximum of 15 students
- Location: In-person classes are held at JASC, located at 5700 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. Online classes are conducted virtually through Zoom or Google Meets.
- Employment Period: September 2026–September 2027.
- Commitment: Preference will be given to instructors who can commit to teaching a full 32-week curriculum across all four sessions.

Required Qualifications
- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese.
- Strong English communication skills.
- Approximately 1–3 years of Japanese language teaching experience is preferred.
- Ability to effectively explain Japanese language concepts to adult learners at varying levels of proficiency.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently prepare engaging lessons while working within an established curriculum.
- Comfort using digital communication and teaching platforms for online instruction.
Japanese language teaching certification or relevant educational credentials are strongly preferred but not required.
Curriculum & Teaching Materials
JASC will provide instructors with the designated textbook for their assigned course. Instructors are responsible for developing or obtaining additional materials needed to support their lessons and teaching activities.
While courses follow an established curriculum and textbook, instructors are encouraged to bring their own teaching style, activities, and supplemental materials to the classroom. We value instructors who can balance curriculum goals with creative and engaging approaches that promote student growth and long-term retention.
Compensation
This position is offered on an independent contractor basis and does not include benefits.
- In-Person Instruction: $70 per 90-minute class
- Online Instruction: $60 per 90-minute class
Compensation includes routine class preparation, instruction, reasonable communication with students and JASC staff, instructor meetings, and other standard class-related responsibilities.
A full eight-week session equals:
- $560 per session for one in-person class
- $480 per session for one online class
Instructors who teach all four eight-week sessions would complete a full 32-week curriculum.

- 会話、聴解、読解、作文、文法など、総合的な日本語力の向上を支援する補助教材やアクティビティの作成・実施
- コースの学習目標に沿いながら、受講生のニーズや習熟度に応じて授業内容や指導方法を工夫・調整
- 受講生が積極的に参加し、自信を持って学習を続けられるような、サポートのある学習環境づくり
- 受講生の学習状況を把握し、受講生のニーズ、出席状況、その他プログラムに関する事項についてJASCスタッフと連携
- インストラクター間ミーティングへの参加、およびカリキュラムの継続性や受講生のレベルアップを支援するためのJASCスタッフ・他のインストラクターとの連携

カリキュラム・教材
JASCより、担当クラスで使用する指定教科書を提供します。授業やアクティビティを補足するために必要な追加教材については、インストラクター自身で作成または準備していただきます。
各クラスでは既定のカリキュラムおよび教科書を使用しますが、インストラクターには、それぞれの指導スタイルや独自のアクティビティ、補助教材を積極的に取り入れていただくことを歓迎しています。
JASCでは、カリキュラムの学習目標を達成しながらも、受講生の成長や長期的な学習継続につながる、創造的で魅力的な授業を提供できるインストラクターを求めています。
報酬
本ポジションは**独立請負契約(Independent Contractor)**による契約となり、福利ット等の福利厚生はありません。
- 対面授業: 90分クラス1回につき $70
- オンライン授業: 90分クラス1回につき $60
上記の報酬には、通常の授業準備、授業の実施、受講生およびJASCスタッフとの必要かつ合理的なコミュニケーション、インストラクターミーティングへの参加、その他通常の授業に関連する業務が含まれます。
8週間の1セッションを担当した場合:

Japanese Instructor Position
- JASC is currently seeking in person instructors for our Donguri Kai Japanese language program, targeting elementary, middle, and high school students. During the 2026-2027 academic year, instructors will be responsible for conducting classes once a week, each session lasting 60 minutes.
Job Description
● Creating and preparing materials and projects aligned with the curriculum
● Implementing various activities to enhance conversation, comprehension, reading, writing, presentation, and translation skills
● Planning, preparing for, and chaperoning seasonal events and activities
● Facilitating smooth communication with parents and JASC staff
● Participating in instructor meetings
● Assisting with JASC events and public relations
Work Conditions
● Location: In Person classes (at 5700 N Lincoln Ave beginning Fall 2026)
● Schedule: Once a week (60-minute sessions)
● Employment period: September 2026 to the end of May 2027. Renewal for the following year is possible.
Required Skills & Experience
● Legally eligible to work in the United States
● Proficiency in both Japanese and English (proficient reading and writing skills in Japanese are essential)
● Experience with classroom document creation and presentation software. (Google Meet or Zoom experience.)
● Previous teaching experience is not required. We welcome candidates with experience working with children, volunteering, and a passion for teaching Japanese to kids.
Compensation
● $60 per 60-minute online class session. This rate includes time for class preparation, class conduct, communication to parents and JASC, Donguri teacher’s meetings, and other class related activities.
● $70 per 60-minute class for in-person session held at JASC.
● No benefits provided due to the independent contractor status.

Employment Type: Part Time
Purpose:
To help individuals remain safely and independently in their homes. Responsible for assistance and instruction in managing and maintaining a household, dressing, feeding and incidental household tasks.
Responsibilities:
- Performs home management tasks including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and laundry, cleaning the refrigerator/stove, shopping and errands.
- Reports unsafe conditions, changes in the consumer’s physical or mental behavior or changes in the environment to the supervisor.
- Escorts consumers to medical appointments when needed and as directed by care plan.
- Completes activity sheets neatly and accurately by following the plan of care.
- Submits the activity sheets on a weekly basis.
- Demonstrates respect for the rights, dignity, and self worth of all consumers, family members and co-workers at all times.
- Is flexible and innovative in all approaches at providing a high quality of care.
- Assists self-directing consumers with meal preparation.
- Maintains satisfactory attendance.
- Completes required annual in-services.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mental Demands: Job involves performing tasks under the direction and supervision of the Home Support Service. Work requires adherence to precise procedures and standards involving a high degree of accuracy in observing, recording and reporting data.
Physical Demands: Appreciable physical effort or strain. Moderately heavy activity, may include lifting up to 30 pounds, constant stooping and walking. Must be able to travel to Client’s home and assist Client on public transportation.
Employment qualifications:
- Position requires H.S. Diploma, G.E.D., or one year of employment in a comparable human service capacity or experience in care for a dependent child or adult family member.
- Applicant must pass a background and fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of 24 hours of pre-service training offered by JASC.
- Annual completion of 12 hours of in-service training to maintain employment.
Knowledge/Skill:
- Work experience with older adults, is flexible and has personal integrity.
- Possesses ability to follow written and oral instructions and accept constructive feedback.
- A basic knowledge of home management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and if possible, an additional language.
